Privacy Policy

YTFocus is built on a simple rule: everything personal stays on your device. The free extension works fully offline and has no account, no analytics, and no advertising.

What the extension stores (on your device only)

• Your subscribed-channel list, learned from YouTube pages you open (sidebar guide, subscriptions page) or entered manually.
• Your settings: filter toggles, Exam Mode, Shorts preferences, focus-timer state, daily watch budget, study topics.
• Local counters: videos hidden, Shorts blocked, focus minutes, minutes watched today.
• Pro fields, if you use them: Google sign-in session (Firebase tokens), license key and status, selected theme pack, your Gemini API key, and device name.

All of this lives in the browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local). It is never transmitted anywhere by the free features.

What the extension reads on YouTube pages

To filter your feed, the content script reads video cards already rendered in the page — channel attributions, video titles, and whether a video element is playing (for the watch budget). This data is used in the moment to decide what to hide and is not collected, logged, or sent anywhere.

What is sent, and when (Pro only)

Pro features use your own Firebase project (see setup in the popup) and Google's APIs directly. There is no YTFocus server in this path — we operate none and receive nothing.

• Sign-in: Google OAuth via Firebase Authentication. Google sees a standard sign-in; we receive only the resulting account id and email, stored in your browser.
• License check: reads one Firestore document (licenses/{key}) containing the key's status and plan. Nothing is written.
• Theme packs: reads the public themePacks collection (pack names and keyword lists).
• Cloud sync: only when you press Backup — uploads your settings JSON to your Firestore (deviceSettings/{uid}/devices/{label}); Restore downloads it. Nothing syncs automatically.
• LLM judging: only when you paste your own Gemini API key — video titles and channel names of feed videos are sent to Google's generateContent endpoint for a theme verdict. No key, no calls, keyword matching instead.

What we never do

• No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting.
• No advertising, no trackers, no third-party scripts.
• No sale or sharing of personal data — there is nothing to share.
• No remote code: the extension executes only the files shipped in the package.

Permissions used

• storage — remember your channels, settings, and counters between sessions.
• activeTab — let the popup talk to the content script on your current YouTube tab (live counts, sync button).
• YouTube host access — read video cards to apply your filters and show the badge/overlays.
• Google API host access — sign-in, Firestore reads/writes, and optional Gemini calls, all to Google services you configured.

Children

YTFocus is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed at children under 13. It collects no data from anyone, regardless of age.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated date above will change with a summary of what moved. Continued use after that point constitutes acceptance.
